Learning FUN

Our Mission

Telfair EEC uses research-based curricula that helps students learn through developmentally appropriate practice using exploration and discovery, empowering children to develop confidence, creativity, and become lifelong critical thinkers. We use the California Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF) framework that aligns with the CA Common Core Standards. We pride ourselves in being a safe, clean, and nurturing community school that welcomes parent partnerships to help all students love school, succeed in kindergarten, and beyond.

GROWING BRAINS

"This first critical period of brain development [that] begins around age 2 and concludes around age 7…provides a prime opportunity to lay the foundation for a holistic education for children. Four ways to maximize this critical period include encouraging a love of learning, focusing on breadth instead of depth, paying attention to emotional intelligence, and not treating young children’s education as merely a precursor to 'real' learning."
Play

POWER OF PLAY

"Let’s celebrate the fact that play creates capable beings. Children can thrive and learn without the 'academic' environments; however, they cannot thrive and learn without healthy, authentic interactions and relationships. These develop through play. Play is indispensable in the early learning environment. When it comes to literacy, child-led play provides ample opportunities for children to build all the developmental skills needed for reading and writing in school and in life."

We need joy as we need air. We need love as we need water. We need each other as we need the earth we share. – Maya Angelou (1927-2014), American writer

The Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom goal is to help nature become an integral, joyful part of children’s daily learning. Children can make connections with the living world simply by interacting with natural materials. Unlike the uniform sameness in texture that plastic toys and manipulatives have, natural materials offer various rich sensory experiences.

Every preschool has unique access to outdoor spaces. But no matter the location, everyone can step outside. “Big nature” elements of sky, sun, plants, and animals are in rural and urban settings alike. Nature is everywhere and its benefits are for everyone, but only if we go outside!
